What is ARN?

When you apply for Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration, a simple way to track your application status online is to use Application Reference Number or the ARN. ARN status helps you in monitoring the progress of your GST registration application. The ARN is an alphanumeric code that is generated by the system when your application initiates the GST registration process. The GST ARN status will show you either of the six different stages of the registration process. The ARN status ranges from the first stage of the application being assigned to approving officer to the last two stages of it either being rejected or accepted.

What is the Format of GST ARN?

It is important for you to know the correct format of the ARN. This unique code is provided to every taxpayer by the GST Council. Using the correct format of the ARN, the applicant can find the correct GST ARN status.

ARN consists of 15 digits. It is an alpha-numeric code that includes the following:

  • The first two are alphabets

  • The following two digits in the code mean the state code

  • The next set of four codes in the number symbolises the month and year

  • The subsequent six digits in the code are the unique numerals generated by the system.

  • The last number is the checksum digit.

To understand the format of the ARN code in a better way, let us cite an ARN number example.

For example, in the code of AA 06 06 18 000000 2,

  • AA is the Alphabets

  • 06 is the State Code

  • 06 is the Month

  • 18 is the Year

  • 000000 is the Six-digit system generated code

  • 2 is the checksum digit

Why is GST ARN Important?

The ARN is important due to the following reasons:

  • The number is used in the smooth transaction of business. It takes around 15 days to process the GST registration application. When you apply, you get the ARN code from the system. It remains a valid ID until you get your GST ID number or GSTIN.

  • You can use the ARN to know significant details on the GST portal after applying to obtain the GST number. ARN number is critical in determining the authenticity of vendors.

  • The ARN allows the vendors to offer GST on a bill of supply without the GSTIN. The moment they get the GSTIN, they need to issue a new invoice with GSTIN.

  • ARN is an identity used with fund agents, mediators, mutual fund advisors, distributors, etc. It is an assurance of the intermediary's registration and a confirmation that there is no fraud.

  • ARN helps you to find the exact brokerage in the case of mutual funds.

Types of GST ARN Status

There are six stages of GST ARN status, and each gives you an update on your GST registration process. Here are the details about these six stages, which will help you understand your ARN status better.

  • The form has been assigned to the GST authority: This type of ARN status indicates that your GST application has been assigned to the approving officer. The officer will then process your form and start handling the approvals. At this point, it is important to know that this status does not mean that your GST application for registration has been either approved or disapproved.

  • Waiting for clarification: This is the next level ARN status given when the GST officer has yet to clarify the request. The GST officer asks the applicant to furnish the clarification on the GST Registration application. This is when the applicant needs to provide all the clarification details on the GST Portal.

  • Clarification Filed: In this type of GST ARN status, the message indicates that you have filed the clarifications sought by the approving officer. Now, the order will be waiting for approval, and the application is on hold by the GST officer.

  • Clarification not Filed: You will get this type of ARN status when you are yet to provide the clarification to the GST officer. It is imperative to remember that you need to provide clarification within the asked period. If not, then there is a high chance that your GST registration application might get rejected due to the delay.

  • Application Approved: This ARN status is a sigh of relief. This is the final status which means that the GST Officer has approved your application for GST registration. The moment you get this status, you can hope to get a GST identification number or GSTIN soon. You will also get the GST registration certificate.

  • Application Rejected: This ARN status may disappoint you. If your application has been rejected, then you will get this ARN status.  This status message says that the GST officer has not approved your application for GST registration. You will have to re-submit the registration form.
