According to RBI regulations, the RTGS charges are as follows:
For transaction between ₹2 and ₹5 Lakhs, the charge cannot be more than ₹25 exclusive of taxes, if any
For transaction amount above ₹5 Lakhs, the charge cannot be more than ₹50 exclusive of taxes, if any
RTGS charges are based on the guidelines provided by the Reserve Bank of India. Although the RBI has waived its processing fees, banks may levy a service charge on such transactions. Banks may levy a lower fee on RTGS transactions, but the RTGS charges cannot cross the ceiling stipulated by the RBI. Moreover, banks cannot levy charges on any inbound transactions.
From 2020, you can use the RTGS service 24X7 throughout the year. As of 2022, there are over 1,60,000+ bank branches that can carry out RTGS transactions. Introduced in 2004 by the RBI, RTGS is one of the common ways to transfer funds from one bank to another. You can use both online and offline modes to conduct an RTGS transaction.
In an effort to make the online transfer of money popular, RBI has waived off RTGS charges for transactions made via netbanking and mobile apps. As a result, if you send money using RTGS via online channels now, you will not be charged a processing fee. However, for offline RTGS transactions initiated via bank branches, you might be required to pay a certain amount as transaction charge. You would also need to pay the applicable GST on the transferred sum. It is important to note that the RTGS charges for offline transactions vary from bank to bank.
As mentioned above, RTGS payment charges for transactions made offline vary. Internally too, there are set transaction limits beyond which the RTGS service charges change. It is, therefore, important for you to check what your bank charges for RTGS transfer before initiating a transaction request.
