How to Find the Chassis Number, Vin and Engine Number of Your Car?

When you think of purchasing a car, the first things that you think of are the brand, model, and price of your dream car. While these details are important, there are some other significant details of a car that should not be overlooked. These are the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine number, and chassis number of your car.

 

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine number, and chassis number act as unique identification numbers of your car and are considered as your car’s DNA. A VIN is a 17-character alphanumeric code that gives you the information about the manufacturing year and month of your vehicle. The last six digits of the VIN number is your car chassis number. It is mandatory to issue a VIN for all vehicles across the world. The VIN and chassis number are vital as they help in avoiding fraud, especially while purchasing a second-hand vehicle.

The Government of India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has launched the online VAHAN NR e-Services portal to maintain a database of all the vehicles registered in the country. You can use this portal to know various details about your car.

1. Visit the VAHAN NR e-Services portal at https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/nrservices/

2. To run a vehicle chassis number search, click on the ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’ option on the dashboard

3. Enter your registered mobile number and click on the ‘Next’ button. If you are using the portal for the first time, you will have to register yourself with your mobile number and email ID

4. Enter your car’s registration number and the captcha code and then select the ‘Search Vehicle’ option

 

Your vehicle details, including the car chassis number, will be displayed on the screen.

There are many ways to find your car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Some of these are discussed below:

• Your Vehicle Registration Certificate

Whenever you buy a new car, the car dealer registers it at the local RTO (Regional Transport Office). The RTO prints various details of the car, including the car’s VIN number on the Registration Certificate (RC). So, you can refer to your car’s RC book to find various important details of the car.

 

• Dashboard

Some car manufacturing companies print the VIN on the car’s driver-side dashboard. However, this may not be provided by all car manufacturers.

 

• Door and Hood

Usually, the car’s VIN number is printed on the car's driver-side door on a metal strip. This can be found on the car’s B-pillar. The car’s VIN number is also usually printed under its hood.

 

• Boot and Rear Wheel

The car’s VIN number can be found in the car’s hood under the spare wheel. You can spot it when you lift the spare wheel in the boot. Certain car manufacturers also print the VIN number above the car’s rear-wheel and the front grille. However, this may not be the case with all car models.

As mentioned earlier, your car’s RC book has all the important details of your car. This also includes the car’s engine number.

An easy way to get your car’s engine number is to call or visit your car dealer. They will be able to provide all the necessary details regarding your vehicle, including the engine number and VIN.

 

• Owner’s Manual

The engine number is stamped on the car’s engine block. However, the exact location may differ for various car models. You can check the car’s owner’s manual to find out where the car manufacturer has printed the engine number of a car.
