The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity social welfare program that was launched under the provisions of the National Food Security Act, 2013. It aims to tackle the issue of undernourishment in pregnant women and women who have just delivered babies.
PMMVY provides cash incentives in three instalments to pregnant women and lactating mothers, worth a total of ₹5,000. The first incentive of ₹1,000 is paid out on early registration of the pregnancy at approved health facilities. After this, the remaining amount is provided in equal instalments of ₹2,000 each.
The following categories of pregnant women (PW) and lactating mothers (LMs) can become beneficiaries of the scheme:
All PW and LMs except those under regular employment with the State Government, Central Government or Public Sector Undertaking
PW and LMs who are receiving similar benefits under any other law in force
Eligible PW and LMs who have their pregnancy after or on January 1, 2017, for their first child
Pregnant and lactating Anganwadi Workers (AWW), Anganwadi Helpers (AWH) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA)
Here are some key advantages of being covered under the PM Matru Vandana Yojana:
The beneficiary is eligible to receive cash incentives under the PMMVY yojana. Here, the incentive is given in three instalments in the following way:
First Instalment
An incentive of ₹1,000 is provided on early registration of the pregnancy at the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) or any approved health facility recognised by the State or Union Territory.
Second Instalment
The second incentive of ₹2,000 is given after six months of pregnancy on completing at least one antenatal check-up.
Third Instalment
The final incentive of ₹2,000 is given after the registration of childbirth and completion of the first cycle of vaccinations such as OPV, BCG, DPT and Hepatitis B.
The eligible beneficiaries shall receive an additional incentive of ₹1,000 under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) for institutional delivery. Hence, the beneficiaries shall get a total maternity benefit of ₹6,000 under the PMMVY and JSY scheme.

If the beneficiary experiences a miscarriage or stillbirth, she will be eligible to claim the remaining instalments during future pregnancies. Specifically, if a miscarriage occurs after claiming the first instalment, she will be entitled to receive the second and third instalments. Similarly, if a miscarriage or stillbirth occurs after claiming both the first and second instalments, she will be entitled to receive the third instalment during future pregnancies. This provision is applicable only if the beneficiary meets the scheme's eligibility criteria in the future.
Since beneficiaries of the PMMVY scheme are eligible to receive its benefits only once, they will not be eligible for future pregnancies in the event of infant mortality. However, this is if they have already claimed the available instalments under the plan.
