Assam Driving Licence

Issued by the Assam RTO, a driving licence is mandatory if you wish to legally drive in the state of Assam.

 

In Assam, you must be at least 16 years of age to obtain a 2-wheeler licence (gearless) and 18 years of age to obtain a 4-wheeler licence. If you wish to opt for a licence for a heavy transport vehicle, you must be at least 20 years of age. Additionally, you must be aware of all the traffic regulations applicable across the state.

The eligibility criteria for getting a driving licence in Assam is as follows:

 

• You need to be at least 16 years old to get a gearless two-wheeler licence.

• You need to be at least 18 years old to get a licence for a motorcycle with gear and Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs).

• You need to be at least 20 years old to get a heavy transport vehicle licence.

• You should be aware of the traffic rules.

• You need to have a learner’s licence before applying for a permanent DL. Once you receive a learner's licence, you can apply for a permanent licence within six months.

To apply for a permanent driving licence in Assam online, you need to follow the steps given below:

 

1. Visit the official website of Assam Transport: https://transport.assam.gov.in/

2. Click on ‘RTO Services’ and select the option for Form 4.

3. Form 4 is the online application form. Here, you need to provide your personal details.

4. Upload documents, including your learner's licence and medical certificate.

5. Once you submit the application form and the documents, you will receive a reference number.

6. Now you need to book the slot for a driving test, as per the availability.

7. On the day of the scheduled test, bring your personal vehicle and appear in the test. Along with checking your proficiency behind the wheels, the test will also gauge your knowledge about the traffic rules.

8. You will receive a permanent driving licence through a registered post shortly if you pass the test.

 

Remember, before applying for a permanent DL, you must have a learner’s licence. You can make a similar application online on the e-services portal by filling in the form for a grant of learner's licence and then appearing in the learner’s licence test.

For an offline application, you need to complete the steps given below:

 

1. Visit your local RTO office to get a permanent DL application form.

2. Submit the form along with the list of stipulated documents.

3. Pay the requisite fees and book your appointment for the driving test.

4. Upon successfully passing the test, you can collect your permanent DL, as per the prescribed time period, from the RTO office.

• Three copies of recent passport-size photographs.

  Here, you need to drive the vehicle in a pattern of H without coming in contact with the columns on the perimeter.

1. Visit the link https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/

2. Choose ‘Online Services’ and then select ‘Driving licence-Related Services.’

3. Select the option for ‘View Driving licence Status.’

4. Choose Assam as your state.

5. Enter your application number and date of birth. Provide the security code and click on ‘Proceed.’

6. You can now see your driving licence status in Assam.

 

Alternatively, you can visit the state government’s transport website to know your Assam DL status. You can follow the steps given below:

 

1. On the transport department’s website, select ‘DL and Registration.’

2. You will be redirected to a new page, where you have the option of: ‘Know Your Application Status.’ Here, you have to provide your application number.

3. You can now view your driving licence application status, Assam.

To receive an international driving licence in Assam, you must hold a permanent driving licence for at least three months. As the state government doesn’t provide the facility of making an online application for an international driving licence, you have to follow the offline process. Here’s a look at the steps required:

 

1. Visit your local RTO office and request for an international driving permit form.

2. Fill in the form and submit the list of prescribed documents.

3. Pay the stipulated fee of Rs. 1000.

4. Post-verification, the RTO office will issue an international driving licence.

 

Alternatively, you can visit the union government’s Parivahan Sewa website to apply for an international driving licence. Here, you need to:

 

1. Select the option of ‘Apply for International Driving Permit.’

2. Enter your permanent driving licence number and date of birth.

3. Fill in the form, upload the documents and pay the fees.

4. Download the receipt and provide it to your local RTO.

5. You will be provided with an international driving licence, post-verification.

 

Remember, the international driving licence has a validity of 12 months, following which you have to apply for its renewal.
