Mumbai Driving Licence

Issued by the Government of India, a driving licence is a document that certifies your ability to drive a vehicle.

If you are a resident of Mumbai and wish to acquire a driving licence, you must be at least 16 years of age (2-wheeler), 18 years of age (4-wheeler), or 20 years of age (heavy motor vehicle). 

To apply for a driving licence in Mumbai, you can either do so offline or online. In the case of the former, you can visit the nearest RTO in your vicinity. In the case of the latter, you must visit the Maharashtra Transport Department’s website and submit your application.

• Age - Age is one of the biggest eligibility criteria -

• 16 year olds are eligible for a gearless two-wheeler driving licence.

• 18 year olds are eligible for a light gear motor vehicle driving licence.

• 20 year olds are eligible for a heavy gear motor vehicle driving licence.

• Education - The applicant should have a minimum education up to the 8th standard.

• Learner’s Licence - To apply for a driving licence in Mumbai the applicant should have a learner’s licence.

• Awareness about Rules - The applicant should be aware of the traffic rules and regulations and must abide by them.

To apply for a driving licence in Mumbai online, follow the steps mentioned below -

• Go to the official portal of Maharashtra Transport Department https://transport.maharashtra.gov.in/

• Download the application form, under the driving licence menu. The applicant will have to get a printout of the application form.

• Fill the form with all details and attach the documents required.

• Find the closest RTO and submit the application form along with the mandated documents to the official.

• Book a slot for your driving test at the RTO.

• On the designated date, appear for the test. After passing the test, the applicant will receive their driving licence in 2-3 weeks.

To apply for a driving licence in Mumbai offline, follow the steps mentioned below -

• Find the closest RTO, and ask for a driving licence form.

• Fill the form with all necessary details like name, blood group, age, etc

• Attach all the mandatory documents with the form.

• Book a slot for your driving test at the RTO.

• On the designated date, appear for the test. After passing the test, the applicant will receive their driving licence in 2-3 weeks.

The documents required to apply for a driving licence in Mumbai are -

• Age proof like Aadhar card, Birth certificate, etc.

• Address proof like Utility bills, Aadhar cards, etc.

• Application form no. 4 (general) / Application form no. 5 (commercial purpose)

• Learner’s licence

• Passport-size photographs (a minimum of 3 photographs are required)

• Four-Wheeler Test

Transport Department of Mumbai

• Go to the official portal of the Transport Department of Mumbai.

• Select the ‘Driving licence’ or ‘Learner licence’ option

• On the next window, select ‘Know your Application status’

• Enter the application form number and click submit.

• The status of the driving licence will appear on the screen.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

• Go to the official portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

• Select ‘Driving licence-related services’ and click on the ‘verify status’ tab.

• Enter the application form number and date of birth.

• Fill the captcha and click submit

• The status of the driving licence in Mumbai will appear on the screen.

To get an international driving licence, you do not have to give any test but it is a must for you to have a permanent driving licence in Mumbai. You only have to fill the application form and submit it with the required documents.

Application Procedure to Obtain an International Driving licence is -

• Visit the nearest RTO office.

• Get the application form, enter all the required details, and submit it with all the supporting documents.

• Pay the charges of Rs. 1,000 to the concerned official.

• The application will then be verified. If there are no faults found in the details and documents, you will receive your international driving licence.
