Everything you need to know about Hyderabad RTO
The Hyderabad Regional Transport Office (RTO) is a vital part of the city's transportation system, ensuring that all vehicles on the road are properly registered and drivers are licensed according to the law. It also plays a key role in maintaining road safety by regulating traffic rules and collecting road taxes.
However, confusion often arises regarding the distinction between the Hyderabad RTO and the Telangana RTO, primarily because Hyderabad is a major city within the state of Telangana. While the Telangana RTO oversees transport regulations and services for the entire state, including numerous districts, the Hyderabad RTO specifically focuses on the urban transport needs of Hyderabad city.
This guide focuses on the Hyderabad RTO and provides an overview of the important functions and services offered by it, helping residents manage their vehicle-related needs more efficiently.
Every region in Hyderabad has a specific RTO code to identify vehicles registered in that area. These codes help differentiate vehicles by location and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

The Hyderabad RTO is responsible for the smooth functioning of traffic management and compliance with motor vehicle laws. It ensures road safety by enforcing regulations and issuing necessary documentation, such as driving licences and vehicle permits.
The RTO oversees the registration of new vehicles and renews registrations when needed. Every vehicle on the road must be registered, and this process is handled by the RTO. Registration involves assigning a unique number to each vehicle, which can later be renewed after a set period.
One of the core responsibilities of the Hyderabad RTO is issuing driving licences. It conducts tests for learners and permanent licences and ensures that drivers meet the required standards. Whether applying for a new licence or renewing an existing one, the RTO processes these requests efficiently.
The Hyderabad RTO also provides vehicle permits, including permits for commercial vehicles and transport services. This ensures that vehicles carrying passengers or goods meet legal and safety requirements.
The RTO is responsible for collecting road tax from vehicle owners. This tax is calculated based on the vehicle type, engine capacity, and other factors. The revenue generated helps in maintaining roads and infrastructure.
Apart from licensing and registration, the RTO enforces road safety norms, including pollution control. Regular checks ensure that vehicles comply with emission standards and other safety regulations.
When dealing with the Hyderabad RTO, certain forms are essential for various services like vehicle registration, driving licence application, and NOC requests.
The following forms are essential for various RTO services:
A medical certificate is required for certain licences and renewals, especially for applicants over the age of 40
This form is essential for registering a new vehicle with the RTO
These forms must be submitted for transferring vehicle ownership due to sale or inheritance
Vehicle registration is compulsory for all vehicles in India, including those in Hyderabad. Here’s a guide on how you can register your vehicle or renew its registration at the Hyderabad RTO.
Visit the Hyderabad RTO or apply online via the Parivahan website
Submit the required documents, which include:

The RTO Superintendent will verify the information entered into the system
The Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) will approve the registration
The RTO will initiate the process for the Smart Card (your vehicle registration card), which will be printed and sent to your registered address by post
If you are selling your vehicle or transferring it due to the death of the owner, the RTO must be informed. The process involves submitting a NOC, proof of transfer (like a sale agreement), and the original RC book.
The seller (transferor) must notify the respective RTO of the vehicle transfer by submitting Form 29 within 14 days for intra-state transfers, or within 45 days if the vehicle is from another state. The buyer (transferee) must apply for ownership transfer by submitting Form 30 along with the required documents. For out-of-state vehicles, additional forms (Form I and Form II) are necessary.
Ownership can be transferred by applying to the RTO using Form 31 within three months of the owner's passing, along with the required fees.
You must submit Form 32 within 30 days of acquiring the vehicle, along with any applicable fees and taxes.
