Vehicle Registration at RTO Tamil Nadu

One of the many functions that an RTO performs is the registration of a vehicle. To register a vehicle in Tamil Nadu, follow the steps in the order they appear.

  1. Download Form 20 from the Tamil Nadu RTO’s official website. Form 20 is available in both English and Tamil. You can download either version, and you must fill it out and attach the necessary supporting documents as instructed.

  2. Take the completed Form 20 to the RTO nearest to you.

  3. An officer at the RTO will inspect the vehicle that is up for registration. However, an inspection is also conducted by the dealer the car is purchased from, and the report submitted by the dealer to you can also be presented to the RTO officer.

  4. After verifying Form 20 and the supporting documents attached to it, the RTO will generate a unique registration number.

  5. The Registration Certificate will reach you via speed post at the address mentioned in Form 20.

Here are documents required for registration:

Fill out application Form-20

  • Attach Form-22 from the manufacturer (PUC check)

  • Attach Form-22A part II where the body is fabricated (PUC check)

The Tamil Nadu RTO will verify the documents attached and generate a registration number basis which you get a Smart Card based Registration Certificate (RC) within 3 days. If you would like an individualised licence number, the Tamil Nadu RTO offers these on an auction basis.

Temporary registration in case of vehicles that are purchased instate but will be eventually registered in another state the same process as permanent registration applies. The temporary registration is valid for a month, and a smaller registration fee will apply.

Having valid motor insurance is mandatory for vehicle registration. To browse your options you can choose from several different types of motor insurance policies available on platforms like Bajaj Markets. Choose from a range of comprehensive insurance policies that offer full protection against third-party liability, own damage to a vehicle, injuries due to accidents and access to a network of garages and service centres.

Third Party Insurance

Third-party insurance is the Motor Vehicles Act mandated insurance type that all vehicle owners have. It protects owners against third party damage liability but does not cover own damage to the vehicle.

Comprehensive Policy

A Comprehensive Insurance policy provides wider coverage than third party insurance. It covers third party damage liability and own damage to the vehicle. The cost of insurance premium, other benefits and features depend upon the type of vehicle you own. Browsing platforms like Bajaj Markets allows you to compare the price and type of insurance across different providers.
