Unified Payments Interface or UPI allows users to send and receive money from one participating bank account to another in a matter of seconds using a smartphone. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you send money to a merchant using UPI:
Open the UPI app on your smartphone
Enter your security code/MPIN to navigate to the UPI app’s home screen
Select the ‘Send’ or ‘Pay’ option
You can choose to enter the vendor’s UPI ID, phone number or bank account details; or you can choose to scan the QR code for the vendor
Enter the relevant details along with the amount to be transferred, along with your PIN when prompted
Once the transaction is successful, both parties will receive confirmation notifications and SMS. The amount is directly debited from the sender’s account and credited to the receiver’s account.
You can also check if you’ve received the money on your UPI app by checking the notifications. However, if you’re looking to request a payment on your UPI ID, here are the steps you need to follow:
Open the UPI app on your smartphone
Enter your security code to navigate to the UPI app’s home screen
Select the ‘Receive’ option
Enter the VPA of the sender along with the amount you’d like to receive and the expiry time for the request
The request will then be sent to the sender for approval
On approval of transaction by the sender, the requested amount will be credited to the default account linked to the VPA. An SMS is sent to both - the sender and receiver, to confirm the transaction.
If you forgot your UPI PIN or would like to change it at some point, you can do so through your UPI app. Here are the steps to help you reset your PIN:
Open the UPI app on your smartphone
Enter your security code to navigate to the UPI app’s home screen
Go to ‘Profile’ section
Choose the bank account for which you’d like to reset the PIN
You will be required to authenticate the process through an OTP PIN
Once authenticated, you can begin using your new UPI PIN.
UPI facilitates seamless transfer of funds between two bank accounts. Here are the different types of transactions you can perform through your UPI app:
Send Money: You can send money by entering the payee’s VPA (Virtual Payment Address), mobile number linked to UPI, bank account details or by scanning QR code.

UPI Mandate is a feature that allows you to schedule transactions to be debited from your bank later. The account of the consumer will be debited when the mandate is fulfilled.
