The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity social welfare program that was launched under the provisions of the National Food Security Act, 2013. It aims to tackle the issue of undernourishment in pregnant women and women who have just delivered babies.

PMMVY provides cash incentives in three instalments to pregnant women and lactating mothers, worth a total of ₹5,000. The first incentive of ₹1,000 is paid out on early registration of the pregnancy at approved health facilities. After this, the remaining amount is provided in equal instalments of ₹2,000 each.

Beneficiaries of the PMMVY Scheme

The following categories of pregnant women (PW) and lactating mothers (LMs) can become beneficiaries of the scheme:

  • All PW and LMs except those under regular employment with the State Government, Central Government or Public Sector Undertaking

  • PW and LMs who are receiving similar benefits under any other law in force

  • Eligible PW and LMs who have their pregnancy after or on January 1, 2017, for their first child

  • Pregnant and lactating Anganwadi Workers (AWW), Anganwadi Helpers (AWH) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA)
