The Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) scheme, introduced as part of the Gold Monetisation Scheme in India, is offered in tranches by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The regulator notifies the details of new issuances periodically. These bonds are issued as stocks as a part of the Government Security Act of 2006.
Investors of SGBs are provided with a Holding Certificate, which acts as proof of investment. The SGB’s selling price is decided based on the closing price of 999 gold purity of the previous three business days of the week post the repayment date. This will be considered based on that date which gets published by the Indian Bullion and Jewelers Association Ltd.
Here’s the SGB rate history from the year of introduction:

The tenor of the Sovereign Gold Bond scheme is eight years. However, you can redeem or encash the bond after the fifth year from the issuance date on the dates of your coupon payments.
You will be notified a month prior to the date of maturity. On maturity, the SGB will be redeemed in INR depending on the selling price published by the Indian Bullion and Jewelers Association Ltd. The redemption and the interest amount are then credited to your bank account directly.
Premature Redemption
You can approach the concerned bank or the issuing authority thirty days before the date of your coupon payment. The request, however, will only be considered if you approach the bank at least a day prior to the date of your coupon payment.
The selling price of SGB is determined by the closing price of 999 gold purity over the previous three business days after the repayment date. This data is published by the Indian Bullion and Jewelers Association Ltd.
The current value of the sovereign gold bonds is calculated in INR, which is fixed based on the average closing price of 999 gold purity. The India Bullion and Jewelers Association Ltd. publishes this information for the preceding three working days of the subscription period.
Interest and maturity proceeds will be credited to the investor's bank account upon the maturity of the sovereign gold bonds after eight years.
The Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) scheme was introduced by the Government of India.
The Sovereign Gold Bond scheme was launched in 2015.
