The Central Government is preparing to abolish the FASTag toll system and replace it with a new toll collection system. As per the current FASTag system, the entire toll amount for the distance between two toll booths is collected from a vehicle, even if the vehicle does not travel the entire distance and completes its journey somewhere in the middle. As per the new system that is being tested, the toll will be collected as per the distance covered by a vehicle on the highway, using a satellite navigation system. A new FASTag service was installed at the Vidyasagar Setu toll on Saturday, April 16, so as to allow vehicles to pass through the bridge without stopping for toll payment or checking. As per the HRBC, the authority that maintains the bridge, FASTag has been implemented on Lane 8 and is currently being tested. Chandigarh to adopt FASTag at parking lots soon

The administration in Chandigarh has decided to introduce the FASTag system at all parking lots managed by the Union Territory’s (UT) municipal corporation. This comes as a move towards making paid parking a hassle-free process. Sharing details regarding this, Dharam Pal, the UT adviser, said that in this new system, the parking fee will be deducted through the FASTag automatically, and there will not be any physical fee payment. He also added that this move will help save time and eliminate traffic jams at these parking points. The administration is also considering allowing parking for two-wheelers free of charge, as these vehicles do not use FASTag.

FASTag users can unlink tags from vehicles from June 30, 2022


After the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has made changes in the implementation of FASTag, the users will now be able to close a FASTag from their vehicles and go for a new tag on the same vehicle number. This improved system will be implemented from June 30, 2022. Earlier, this service was restricted because of the permanent linking of a FASTag with a vehicle number. An official who is monitoring the implementation of this system said that a new set of guidelines is going to be issued soon. These guidelines will mandate banks and financial institutions to make sure that users are told about how to close a FASTag after clearing the dues.

FASTag collections cross ₹4,000 crore in March, FY-2022 total stands around ₹38,000 crore

As per a new report, the FASTag toll collections for the month of March 2022 reached a total of ₹4,095 crore, the highest collection recorded in a month since the introduction of FASTag in 2016. Moreover, the total FASTag collection for the financial year 2022 stood at around ₹38,000 crore, which is 68% higher than the collections of the previous year. As per the report, almost one-third of the total revenue came in the last three months. Authorities believe this has been a result of the growing adoption and implementation of FASTag across the nation.

FASTag worth ₹32,451 crore collected for fiscal year 2021-22 till March 24

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, informed the Rajya Sabha that as of March 24, the FASTag toll collection for the year 2021-22 stood at ₹32,451 crore. He also informed that after the implementation of the FASTag system on February 15, 2021, the time taken for a vehicle to cross a toll plaza has come down to just 47 seconds. This has in turn translated to an increase in productivity by 130%, where a toll plaza operator can now process 148 additional vehicles per hour in a lane. In a separate written reply to the Lok Sabha, Nitin Gadkari added that multiple steps are being taken in the interest of truck drivers. These include facilities such as wayside amenities, truck parking bays, food courts, etc. on National Highways.

Delhi-Meerut Expressway to have revised toll collection from April 1, 2022

According to a public notification from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the toll collection for Delhi-Meerut Expressway has been revised from April 1, 2022. As per the revised structure, the toll collection will now be on the 59.77 km stretch of the Delhi-Meerut expressway that starts from Nizamuddin Bridge on National Highway 9 and ends at National Highway No 334. The entry and exit points where the revised rates are applicable are Dasna, Rasoolpur, Sarai Kale Khan Indirapuram, Dundahera, Sikroad, Bhojpur and Main Plaza in the states of Delhi and UP. As per the new structure announced by NHAI, it will cost ₹155 for a light vehicle like a car or jeep to commute on the entire expressway from Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan to Kashi toll plaza in Meerut. The toll collection was originally scheduled to start on December 25 last year but it was put on hold.
